About Speaker
ChM Ts Dr. Ong Song-Quan is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Tropical Biology and Conservation (ITBC), Universiti Malaysia Sabah. He is interested in how medically important arthropods respond to climate, land changes and human activities. In particular, how biotic and abiotic factors influence the vector population and the ability to transmit. As part of his study, he used novel technologies and image-based tools for ecological monitoring of vectors and diseases. In recent years, his research has focused on the development of computer vision and deep learning models, particularly for automatic detection systems to monitor vectors, pathogens and potential interaction with hosts. This includes the use of UAVs with RBG or multispectral or LiDAR sensor or/and bioacoustics to collect the data that will allows researchers to study the vectors’ habitats as well as their interaction with their natural hosts. He holds a PhD in Medical and Veterinary Entomology, a Master’s degree in Molecular Entomology and a second Master’s degree in Data Science and Analytics. Dr. Ong’s research findings have been published in numerous publications including ‘Pest Science Management’, ‘Parasites & Vectors’, ‘Malaria Journal’, ‘Scientific Report’/’Scientific Data’, ‘Current Research in Parasitology & Vector-Borne Diseases’ etc.
